High quality bioplastic from waste water is possible

24 May 2017

In the recently finished PHARIO project, it was demonstrated that PHA bioplastic of constant high quality can be made from active sludge and organic waste material at sewage treatment plants. The plastic also shows good biodegradabilty. PHA - Polyhydroxyalkanoate – is produced by bacteria. For the bacteria, this plastic is a type of energy reserve. When there is a lot of food available in the water, they make some of this plastic. They eat this plastic again when there is a food shortage. What makes PHA bioplastic so special? The plastic is very stable and can be used in a great variety of products (News Item Foundation for Applied Water Research STOWA, 18 April 2017).
