Manufacturers cover up nutritional values

22 February 2017

Many producers only mention the nutritional value after preparation on their packs. This way they cover up the amount of sugar, fat, and salt in their products. According to the Dutch consumer association (Consumentenbond), labels should include the nutritional value per 100 gram of ‘unprepared product’ so consumers know what they are buying. It is legally permitted to use the nutritional value of the prepared product, but this does not give information about the nutritional value of the sauce or mix itself. Consumers cannot compare products based on the nutritional values of the prepared products, especially when different recipes are used (Consumentenbond, 10 February 2017).
