EU Project FIRST2RUN: Bioplastics from thistles

25 August 2015

Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI) has allocated a 17 million euros grant to FIRST2RUN, a European project aiming to demonstrate the technical, economic and environmental sustainability of a highly innovative, integrated bio-refinery. The project will be coordinated by Novamont.
Low input oilseed cultures (for example thistle) cultivated on arid and/or marginal land, are used to extract vegetable oils to be converted into bio-monomers and esters for the formulation of bioproducts such as bioplastics. By-products will be further enhanced to obtain other value-added chemicals in order to increase the sustainability of the value chain (Press Release Novamont, 23 July 2015).
