EU: 2012 municipal solid waste data released

On February 18, Eurostat released 2012 data on municipal solid waste (MSW) for EU Member States. Germany generated the most MSW in 2012 at 49.15 million tons, followed by France, Italy and the UK. For the EU-27, the total was 246.63 million tons, down from 251.31 million tons in 2011.
Spain sent the most MSW to landfills in 2012: 13.73 million tons, followed by Italy, the UK and France. For the EU-27, the total was 81.82 million tons, down from 86.06 million tons in 2011. France led EU Member States in waste recovery as energy, sending 11.08 million tons to R1 incinerators. Following France were Germany, Italy and the UK (Recycling Laws International, 7 March 2014).
