EC: New proposal Packaging Waste Directive before end 2015

27 February 2015

On 25 and 26 February 2015 NVC attended the Packaging Waste & Sustainability Forum in Brussels. During the forum Karl Falkenberg, Director-General for Environment of the European Commission, said that work on a new proposal for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive was starting that same day. He expected the proposal to be published after summer, but definitely before the end of the year.
The main concern the new commission had with the old proposal, was that only environmental concerns were taken into account, not economic concerns. They also want to look at the proposal as an opportunity to create jobs. Moving away from landfill creates jobs and economic activity.
